Everything you need to know about how to clean carpet with a Rug Doctor
Before you begin cleaning
Prep your carpets to ensure you get an ideal clean every time
1. PREPARE:
For an optimal clean, move furniture to the center of the room. You will work from the perimeter into the center of the room. Clean the perimeter first, move furniture back into place and clean the center of the room. For best results, remove furniture from the treated room until carpets are fully dried.
2. VACUUM:
Use a normal dry vacuum cleaner to sweep the area you are about to clean. This helps keep the Rug Doctor system working efficiently by reducing excess dust and dirt.
3. PRE-TREAT:
Pre-treat any special problem areas with Rug Doctor Hi-Traffic Pre-Treatment.
Filling the machine
Fill your machine with the perfect cleaning solutions to revitalize your carpets.
1. MIX:
Combine hot tap water and cleaning solution in a bucket. For heavily soiled carpets, use 4 ounces of solution for every gallon of water. For carpets that are ordinarily or lightly soiled, use only 2 ounces per gallon.
2. FILL:
Remove the white upper tank and fill the exposed lower tank with the mixed cleaning solution. The tank is filled when the liquid is covering the filter screen halfway.
3. CHECK CONNECTIONS:
Inspect the back of the Rug Doctor machine to ensure hose connections are secure. Also, make sure the switch on top is set to clean carpet instead of upholstery.
4. POWER ON:
Plug in the power cord and position the machine. Refer to label on machine and press the “ON” switch for carpet on the top of the machine.
Cleaning your carpets
Now that the prep work is done, it's time to clean your carpets. Use the tips below to get the most out of your Rug Doctor rental.
- Cleaning your carpets
- Changing the water
- Finishing Up
Press and pull.
While pressing the red button on the handle, pull the machine slowly and steadily backward in a straight line at a pace of 1-2 feet per second. Keep the brush against the carpet surface. Soiled solution should begin to enter the upper tank. Remember to keep the machine moving to avoid overly agitating one spot on your carpet.
Release and tilt.
Release the red button 6 to 12 inches before ending each pass to stop the flow of cleaning solution. Tilt the machine backward and reposition it accordingly to begin a new pass. Repeat until finished or cleaning solution is used up.
Change the water and keep cleaning
Pay attention.
Continue cleaning until all of the cleaning solution is used. When this occurs, you will hear a loud clicking noise and soiled water will stop entering the upper tank.
Change the solution.
Press the “OFF” switch on the Rug Doctor machine and remove the upper tank. Pour the dirty contents into a toilet or outdoors. If pouring into a toilet, make sure the cylindrical dome filter has not fallen into the recovery tank as it can clog your toilet. Rinse out tank, pour in more mixed cleaning solution and reattach. Resume cleaning and repeat as needed.
Finish your clean
Power off
When you are done cleaning your carpets and are satisfied with the clean you have achieved, press the “OFF” switch, unplug the machine and empty the upper tank one final time.
Furniture tips.
When cleaning is complete, move furniture back into the room. Turning on overhead ceiling fans and opening windows will help speed up drying time. If the carpet is not completely dry, place aluminum foil under furniture legs until fully dried.

Test your clean.
Before cleaning bigger sections, test the fabric for colorfastness by cleaning a small, hidden area with the Utility Tool. Blot the test area with a white paper towel. If no color appears on the paper towel, continue cleaning. If some color appears, there is a chance the Utility Tool will cause mild color running.
Squeeze lever and pull..
Squeeze the Utility Tool lever while pulling it over fabric. Work at a slow, steady pace. Overlap cleaning strokes slightly as you go.
Finish your clean
Power off.
When you are done cleaning, press the “OFF” switch. Disconnect both hoses from the machine and hold them over the sink. Squeeze the Utility Tool trigger to drain all excess liquid. Empty the upper tank into a toilet or outdoors, and reconnect the original machine hoses.
